About IB Primary Years Programme (PYP)

 

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) for children aged 5 - 12 (Grade 1-5) nurtures and develops young students as caring, active participants in a lifelong journey of learning. Through its inquiry-led, transdisciplinary framework, the PYP challenges students to think for themselves and take responsibility for their learning as they explore local and global issues and opportunities in real-life contexts.

 

 

Taught in over 109 countries around the world, the PYP curriculum framework is uniquely adaptable to state and national standards.

Guided by six transdisciplinary themes of global significance, students deepen their learning by developing their conceptual understandings; strengthening their knowledge and skills across and beyond subject areas.

CHILD-CENTRED APPROACH

IB PYP takes on an inquiry-based approach to learning which keeps students engaged in the process of knowledge gathering. Activities under PYP are designed to fit an environment that keeps students at the centre of the process, and encourages them to be involved through active participation. Teachers act as facilitators and observers in this entire process of learning.   

COLLABORATIVE LEARNING

IB PYP also concentrates its energy on giving tasks, projects and assignments to students which teach them to work in groups, to collaborate and to share information with each other in order to enhance their knowledge. Learning happens in a fun and interactive manner and students learn the importance of teamwork and discussions to solve problems.

TRANSDISCIPLINARY APPROACH

This approach encourages students to discover answers to key questions such as “who am I, where do I belong, what is the importance of the environment which is around me”. This method weaves a story which moves from subject to subject to teach the students the essence of each topic.
